Elon Musk announced on social media that he will be relocating the headquarters of his companies, X and SpaceX, out of California following the signing of a new law by Governor Gavin Newsom. This law prohibits school districts from informing parents if their children choose to use a different gender identity at school.
"This is the final straw," Musk wrote on X (formerly Twitter). "Due to this law and others before it that have targeted both families and businesses, SpaceX will move its HQ from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas."
Musk mentioned that he had warned Governor Newsom about a year ago that such laws would drive families and businesses away from California to protect their children.
In another post on X, Musk announced that the headquarters of the social media company would move from San Francisco to Austin, Texas. He cited not only the new law but also the increasing violence in San Francisco as reasons for the move.
"Had enough of dodging gangs of violent drug addicts just to get in and out of the building," Musk said about the X headquarters in San Francisco.
Governor Newsom signed the SAFETY Act into law on July 15, aiming to end "forced outing" policies. Previously, schools had to notify parents if their children were using a different name or pronoun at school than what was on their birth certificate, regardless of the student's consent. The new law stops schools from being required to inform parents.
