The Harris-Walz campaign seeks to build on the success of the 2020 election by focusing on mobilizing Black voters in Georgia. During an August 29 speech, Vice President Kamala Harris, now the Democratic presidential nominee, urged supporters to stay determined and avoid overconfidence, reminding them that the race would be close.
Framing her campaign as a "fight for America's future," Harris emphasized key issues such as affordable childcare, paid leave, and healthcare, along with tax breaks for families. She also underscored the importance of defending women's abortion rights.
Harris pointed out Georgia's crucial role in past elections, encouraging voters to help secure another Democratic victory in 2024. Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, recently completed a two-day bus tour through South Georgia, meeting with local communities.
Although Trump narrowly lost Georgia in 2020, current polls give him a slight edge over Harris. Edwin Benton, a political science professor, explained that the Harris-Walz campaign is focusing on mobilizing Black voters again to replicate the turnout that helped flip Georgia in 2020. Harris' nationwide travels have been aimed at narrowing Trump's polling lead, particularly in battleground states.
Despite earlier gains by Trump among Latino and Black voters, Harris has reversed many of those trends since becoming the Democratic nominee. Georgia remains a key battleground. Harris also agreed to a debate with former President Trump on September 10.
Her campaign continues to reach out to undecided voters with less than 70 days until the election.
