"They attempted to kill your predecessor," said Raskin to Vance

At the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) addressed Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), the GOP's vice presidential candidate, with a pointed remark about the violent actions of some Republican supporters. Raskin reminded Vance that, during the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack, rioters chanted "Hang Mike Pence," as they sought to block the certification of the 2020 election results.

Raskin criticized former President Donald Trump, saying that Trump's constitutional duty was to ensure the laws were upheld, not to incite violence against his own vice president. He highlighted how Pence, along with other former Trump administration officials, has since distanced himself from Trump and refused to back his return to the presidency.

The congressman drew attention to the unprecedented situation of a former vice president refusing to support the president he once served with. He also emphasized that rioters targeted Pence because he did not comply with Trump's plan to overturn the election.

In response, Trump's campaign dismissed Raskin's comments, labeling them as extreme and accusing him of using incendiary rhetoric for political purposes.
