WR Tim Patrick of the Broncos said he "felt good" after receiving his first pass in more than two years

Tim Patrick's journey over the last two years could have easily driven others to consider retirement, but not him. Despite being an undrafted free agent who secured a multi-year contract with the Broncos in 2021, Patrick spent the subsequent two seasons sidelined due to injuries. However, on Sunday, he marked his return to the NFL field, participating in Denver's preseason opener against Indianapolis.

Though he recorded just one catch for 14 yards, that single reception was symbolic of a much greater achievement.

"It felt good; it honestly hasn't felt that long," Patrick reflected, as shared on the team's official site. "I face tough competition every day, so it just felt like another day at work."

Patrick's teammates fully appreciated the significance of the moment, eagerly acknowledging their veteran colleague after his catch. They were unbothered by the taunting penalty that followed his brief celebration.

"All of us in the huddle were like, 'It's his first catch in two years, man,'" Broncos receiver Courtland Sutton said, as reported by the Denver Post. "He could have done whatever he wanted. It was just amazing to see him back doing what he loves. He’s been putting in so much work, and to see him make that first catch in a game was awesome.

"I'm really happy for him. I think he's going to have a standout season this year."

When Patrick inked his three-year, $34 million extension in 2021, he was on the cusp of his 28th birthday and was delivering a solid season with 53 catches, 734 yards, and five touchdowns. He had established himself as a reliable third receiver, earning his spot on the team through sheer determination and winning the respect of the Broncos organization.

Then came the setbacks. In August 2022, Patrick tore his ACL during Broncos camp. A year later, a torn Achilles prematurely ended his 2023 season, forcing him back into surgery and another lengthy rehabilitation.

But now, all that is behind him. Sporting a new jersey number, switching from 81 to 12, and with just one year remaining on his contract, Patrick is poised to make the most of his opportunity.

His return in Denver's win over Indianapolis was a promising start.
